Coming from the show floors of Chicago, founder Donald Svehla realized the need for an industry news source back in 1993. To fill the void, Svehla – with the support of industry friends – began putting his 20+ years of tradeshow experience down on paper. The result was the first Exhibit City News, which launched in June 1994 and was a small 8-page newsletter for Chicago’s tradeshow workers and community.
By 1996, the newspaper had grown into a 32-page national newspaper bearing the tagline “Uniting the Nation’s Tradeshow Community.” Over the past 18 years, ECN has evolved into an indispensable resource for industry news and information. Full color was added in 1998 and thanks to reader demand, went from a bi-monthly publication to monthly in 1999.
In 2001, ECN changed again with a redesigned website, giving readers and advertisers added value and access. The website, www.ExhibitCityNews.com, has become recognized as one of the most visited sites in our industry. ECN has added a “News Blast” service for web subscribers, bringing up-to-date stories, reports and advertising directly into their e-mail at no charge.
ECN has no plans of slowing down now. During 2010, ECN introduced more opportunities for advertisers and readers with our Headliner, Mid-Month and our very popular People on the Move News Blasts with more planned for 2012. We also added to our online presence by starting a social networking campaign, which consists of up-to-the-minute information posted on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and even Flickr.
ECN’s growing staff includes both journalists and industry professionals from across the nation. Thought-provoking analysis and breaking news keeps readers abreast of the issues important to their professional lives. Coverage includes regional, national and international features, as well as updates on association activities. Regular columns offer solutions to common problems. Product news and reviews keep readers up-to-date on the ever-changing landscape of tools and technology.
