Date Opened: The first landing was August 29th, 1938 (the first scheduled passenger flight was exactly one year later).
Size: Covering over 4,600 acres, Toronto Pearson International Airport (Pearson Airport) is Canada’s largest and busiest airport. The airport has two main terminals and five runways. Terminal 1 is one of the largest airport terminals in the world.
Transportation: The Union Pearson Express (UP Express) connects Pearson Airport and Union Station in downtown Toronto in 25 minutes. Pearson Airport is also served by regional GO Transit buses, MiWay, and TTC services, and easily accessed via Highways 401 and 427. Taxis and ride-shares are available curbside.
On-site Facilities: Over 130 restaurants, cafés, and retail stores; free Wi-Fi throughout both terminals; duty-free shopping; prayer rooms; children’s play zones; lounges including Air Canada Maple Leaf, Plaza Premium, and American Express Centurion Lounges; and an in-terminal Sheraton Gateway Hotel with direct access to Terminal 3.
Fun Fact 1: Pearson Airport handles over 50 million passengers annually, connecting to more than 180 destinations worldwide, making it one of the top 30 busiest airports globally.
Fun Fact 2: The airport’s code, YYZ, comes from the former Malton railway telegraph station code “YZ.” When the airport was built nearby, the “Y” prefix used for most Canadian airports was added to create YYZ.
