The Right Place for the Right Show

Beyond the Big Convention Cities

Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago: These three tradeshow cities host some of the largest, most modern, and well known tradeshow venues in the country. But sometimes choosing a city and venue for a tradeshow is not just a matter of size or popularity. Sometimes a city and venue is less chosen and more of a logical outgrowth of economic ecosystem. Regional economy, industry, universities, or even special facilities can make for the right choice of a tradeshow site.

Agriculture and Farming

Case in point: Kansas City, Missouri. The city’s central location in the farm belt makes it a natural pick for agribusiness, meat processing, livestock, and veterinary medicine trade. The KC Animal Health Corridor, running from Manhattan, Kansas through Kansas City to Columbia, Missouri is the largest concentration of animal health interests in the world. 56 percent of global animal health, diagnostic, and pet food sales are generated by 300 companies in the region. As a result, Kansas City hosts the Animal Health Summit, the Ag Expo, the Crops & Cattle Conference, and many other animal care and meat industry conferences.

Not too far away, Lexington, Kentucky is a center for equine health and breeding, horse industry events, as well as veterinary science. The Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event is held annually at the Kentucky Horse Park. There’s BreyerFest, the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows which run though July and August. The world’s largest outdoor American saddlebred show is held here: the Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show. Finally, there is the Keeneland September Yearling & November Breeding Stock Sale, and the Thoroughbred Makeover. Lexington ain’t horsing around.

In the same state as Lexington is Louisville. The home of the Kentucky Derby doesn’t just feature horses–livestock, trucking, farm machinery, and landscaping equipment are major shows of the region. The Kentucky Exposition Center is the permanent home of the National Farm Machinery Show and the North American International Livestock Exposition.

A few states west and you have another center for industrial production, Oklahoma. The oil capital of the world in the early 20th century, Oklahoma has a historic connection to petroleum. Oklahoma City hosts the Oklahoma Oil & Natural Gas and the SPE OKC Oil and Gas Symposium. The Tri-State Oil and Gas Convention is held annually in Woodward, Oklahoma. There is also the Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma Events which hosts periodic seasonal conferences, annual meetings, and policy forums around Oklahoma City targeting state energy leaders and legislative updates.

Technology

For technology head south to San Antonio, Texas. The Home of Military Medicine is a locus of military installations, hospitals, medical research facilities, as well as cybersecurity and defense contractors. Shows include the Alamo Cybersecurity Exposition (ACE), the Operational Medicine Symposium & Technology Showcase (OpMed), the Military Flight Training USA Summit, the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Tech Expo, and the ADS San Antonio Expo.

While famous for the gigantic media and pop culture event Comic Con, San Diego also hosts a plethora of medical, biotech, and healthcare tradeshows throughout the year. The NACHC Community Health Institute & Expo, the Hospital Medicine Update CME Conference, the NP CE Conference, the AAP National Conference and Exhibition, the San Diego Safety Summit, the MedTech Strategist Innovation Summit, American Medical Seminars (AMS), and the BIO International Convention are all hosted by the Birthplace of California.

Events for the other end of tech, robotics and artificial intelligence, can be found on the other end of the country–Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Carnegie Mellon and University of Pittsburgh contribute to the Steel City’s ecosystem of robotics, AI, advanced manufacturing, and autonomous systems. Two particular shows this year are Pittsburgh Robotics & AI Discovery Day 2026 and IROS 2026 (IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems). There are also periodic PRN Robotics & Tech Happy Hours, which are exactly what they sound like, networking events for engineers, students, and businesses.

These are just some examples of how region plays into event location. Sometimes it is not a site’s fame or mere luck of the draw. Attendee proximity (farm interests in KC), equipment and products already placed in the area (Oklahoma’s oil extraction industries), educational nexuses (robotics and AI in Pittsburgh), and simple popular association (horses, the Derby in Louisville) can all contribute to city and venue choice beyond what is typically expected for a tradeshow’s location.
