SMG proudly announces the opening of the state-of-the-art Albany Capital Center in downtown Albany. A ribbon cutting ceremony led by New York State Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul and the Albany Convention Center Authority, a NYS public authority, was held on March 1 for esteemed guests to tour the new, modern meeting and convention facility. The $78.5 million dollar convention center, located at 55 Eagle Street and just steps from the Capitol, was completed on time and on budget employing 140 workers on average from 11 trades and will provide 120 permanent jobs to run and maintain the building.

“This new convention center is key to the continued economic development of this area and will play a pivotal role in drawing events and visitors from around the country,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “This modern, convention facility will help ensure that the Capital Region remains competitive for years to come, while also having a significant, positive impact on the community.”

As manager of the ACC, SMG has booked 62 events for 2017 that will span 101 days of activities.  This year’s events will spur 3,750 hotel room nights, of which more than 3,200 are new business for Albany. An additional 28 events have already been booked through 2021. On top of the $26.5 million in annual visitor spending, approximately $1 million more in sales, use, fuel, auto rental, personal income, and occupancy taxes will be associated with new visitor spending.

“After years in the making, the entire Albany Convention Center Authority team applauds Governor Cuomo for having the foresight to build this economic generator,” said Gavin Donohue, chairman, Albany Convention Center Authority. “This project took much collaboration with local and state government, a strict construction timeline and a commitment by all parties to deliver the project on time.  The ACC is a testament to what this area can achieve, and we look forward to seeing its schedule fill up in the coming weeks and months ahead as well as opening the door in the Capital Region to new shows and events.”
