The city of Seoul will welcome its first Comic Con event in August 2017 thanks to ReedPOP, an international division of Reed Exhibitions that concentrates on pop culture events. The two-day convention will be held at COEX, a convention center and shopping mall in Seoul that also contains nearly 400,000 square feet of exhibit space. The venue also contains performance halls and a movie theater, making it a facility that organizers say is ideal for a Comic Con event.
Like similar events worldwide, Comic Con Seoul will focus on comics, movies, video games, cosplay, anime during the three-day event. In addition, the Korea Championships of Cosplay will take place during the show. Fans will have the opportunity to interact with writers, illustrators and designers in Artist Alley, as well as attend demo sessions by professional artists; classroom sessions and behind-the-scenes panels featuring glimpses into films and popular game productions.
Bo-Kyung Byun, president and CEO of Coex, said, “We’re incredibly excited to be a part of bringing an event with such a prestigious reputation as Comic Con to Seoul. As we are located in Gangnam, at the heart of Korean pop-culture, we believe this will truly be one of the year’s greatest events at Coex and expect a huge turnout.”
Lance Fensterman, global senior vice president of ReedPOP, called the event an important addition for both the Korean culture and the Comic Con family. “We are honored and excited to work with the Comic Con Seoul team to bring this iconic pop culture festival to Korea,” said Fensterman. “Comic Cons bring passionate fans together to enjoy the latest and best in movies, cartoons, games and other entertainment. We hope Korean fans will love it. We are certainly having fun creating the experience for them.”
