Five years ago

beMatrix Educational Academy Creates “beManiacs”

In early 2020, beMatrix USA launched its Educational Academy, drawing more than 60 exhibit and design professionals to Georgia for hands-on training in using its modular frame system and CAD design software. Dubbed the “beManiac Academy,” the event offered one-on-one sessions with beMatrix experts, helping attendees optimize their designs and boost ROI.

Participants praised the program for its practical insights and innovative approach, further solidifying beMatrix as a leader in exhibit system education. Each attendee received a certificate of completion, equipped with tools to elevate their future projects.

Fifteen years ago

Boston’s Willwork Rises from the Ashes

In January 2010, Exhibit City News reported on Willwork, Inc.’s recovery following a devastating fire that destroyed its headquarters in Avon, Massachusetts, in February 2009. The fire left the company without a home base, but under founder Bill Nixon Jr.’s leadership, operations resumed quickly in a temporary location.

By January 2010, the reconstruction of a new headquarters was underway, designed to improve efficiency and expand capabilities. Willwork’s resilience and commitment to its clients and employees embodied the industry’s spirit of overcoming challenges. A rededication ceremony was planned for April 2010.

Twenty years ago

Shutterbug Michael Launches Exposures

In 2004, Las Vegas tradeshow photographer Gary Michael founded Exposures, Ltd., offering digital photography and imaging services to convention and tradeshow marketers nationwide.

Michael, who started in the industry in 1983, was already well-known for his creativity and professionalism. His accolades included the International Association of Exhibition Management’s “Art of the Show” award in 2003 and the Professional Photographers of Nevada’s “Best of Show” award for architectural photography in 1996.

Exposures, Ltd. brought cutting-edge photography to events across the country, building on Michael’s reputation for excellence.

Tough Issues Face Industry

In 2004, an industry survey spotlighted key challenges in tradeshow transportation, including driver shortages, rising fuel costs, and increasing maintenance expenses.

Driver shortages emerged as a top concern, with companies like First Fleet Corp. addressing the problem through recruitment efforts, training, and better scheduling. Industry leaders emphasized the need for sustainable strategies to attract skilled drivers and mitigate costs, ensuring the success of tradeshow logistics.

Twenty-five years ago

Life is Good for Niche Contractor

In January 2000, Exhibit City News featured Ray McFarland, founder of 21st Century Expo Group, as he and his wife, Leslie, celebrated nearly a decade of success. Established in 1991, the company thrived by focusing on smaller, regional tradeshows and events, earning 30 percent of its revenue from national shows and 70 percent from regional and corporate events.

McFarland’s emphasis on personal client relationships and addressing gaps left by larger contractors set the company apart. His leadership role in the Exhibit Contractors Association (ECA) underscored his dedication to advancing the industry.

Pittsburgh Airport Named ‘Best in the Nation’

In 1999, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) was named the best airport in the United States and third-best globally in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

Praised for food, shopping, and amenities, PIT ranked just behind Singapore’s Changi and Amsterdam’s Schiphol. With over 100 shops and restaurants and a streamlined design, PIT set a high standard for traveler satisfaction, cementing Pittsburgh as a key destination for both business and leisure.

Survey Shows Turnaround in Tradeshow Labor

A 1999 survey conducted at the Institute of Food Technologists’ Annual Meeting revealed significant improvements in tradeshow labor and visitor experiences at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Respondents rated cooperation, cleanliness, and overall quality significantly higher than in previous years.

The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) implemented key reforms, including enhanced transportation, expanded parking, and better customer service. These efforts bolstered Chicago’s reputation as a premier tradeshow destination and paved the way for hosting larger events in the years ahead.
