Association News: EDPA Members Have Busy Summer Nationwide

From Engage to Golf, Poker, Baseball & Bowling

by Jeanne Brei

It began with the return of the mid-year Engage conference (pictured above; photo credit Oscar & Associates), which debuted to great success last year and returned this year to the legendary University Club in downtown Chicago on June 27. The one-day event featured two keynote presentations, a networking luncheon with moderated discussion groups around key industry topics and ended with a cocktail reception hosted by the EDPA Midwest chapter.

EDPA Summer Engage speakersDavid Hernandez & Tereasa Surratt (pictured right), husband-and-wife ad execs at Ogilvy by day, and innkeepers of the historic Camp Wandawega in their “spare time,” spoke about how their experience building brands helped them transform a dilapidated, forgotten lakeside resort into a globally acclaimed boutique getaway recognized by Travel & Leisure as one of the “Greatest Hotels in the World” in “The Virtuous Cycle of Creativity: Brand Building Through Experiences & Fueling Your Creative Life.”

Later, Michael Barkin, sales team founder of breakout startup Trunk Club, presented “Disruption and the Importance of an Experience-First Mentality” and discussed how the Trunk Club disrupted an entire old school industry by assessing what was wrong, solving each element and evolving a new form of retail—and what lessons can be applied to the conference, tradeshow and live branded event space.

Because of the inclement weather, golfers were only able to complete 9 holes. However, this did not put a damper on the day, which included prize drawings, food and networking with industry colleagues. Through tee sponsorships from our generous members, they were able to award $1,000 scholarships to two Bemidji State University exhibit design students. The recipients will be recognized at their Winter Meeting in February. The next UMEDPA meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15. Members will have the opportunity to tour the new Bell Museum on the St. Paul U of M Campus, followed by networking at Stout’s Pub.
