Austin Celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week

Visit Austin kicks off the 36th annual National Travel and Tourism Week with the second annual Tourism & Hospitality Career Fair, connecting hospitality businesses with local talent.

National Travel and Tourism Week is celebrated in communities nationwide to showcase the impact of travel to policymakers, business leaders and media through events and other activities. Throughout the week of May 5-11, Visit Austin will celebrate NTTW with live music performances at the Austin Visitor Center and by providing discounts at local businesses for visitors and members of the hospitality industry. In addition, the Visit Austin Foundation is encouraging those who witness outstanding customer service from a member of the hospitality industry to nominate them for the Visit Austin Foundation Award and Scholarship.

“National Travel and Tourism Week is a week when we get to celebrate the 126,000 hospitality employees in this city who continue to leave a lasting impression on visitors from around the world,” says Tom Noonan, president and chief executive of Visit Austin. “We are grateful for the employees in our industry who are vital to Austin tourism.”

Starting May 5 at the Austin Visitor Center, Visit Austin is hosting live performances from local musicians: Laura Lee Imhoff, Ali Holder, Kevin Galloway, Swing 512, Caleb J. Murphy, Joe Drennan and Ray Prim. More than 80 local businesses are providing discounts through the Austin Insider Deals program during NTTW. The winner of the Heart of Hospitality Award and Scholarship will receive a career development scholarship from the Visit Austin Foundation to be announced at the Visit Austin annual luncheon in November.

With 881,400 square feet of high-tech, highly desirable meeting space in the heart of downtown, the Austin Convention Center is just steps from much of what makes Austin so dynamic and engaging. In terms of space, the center offers 247,052 square feet of contiguous, column-free exhibit space; two ballrooms of 40,510 and 23,000 square feet each; and 54 meeting rooms.

The Austin Convention Center is a gigabit-rated building and ranks among the most technologically advanced convention centers in the country. When the facility doubled its size, the Austin Convention Center upped the ante in the technical convention industry by installing a communication infrastructure capable of moving voice, video and data at over 1 billion bits a second. The Austin Convention Center also offers complementary wireless internet service.

Visit Austin is the official destination marketing and sales organization for the City of Austin. An accredited member of the Destinations International, Visit Austin is charged with marketing Austin nationally and internationally as a premier business and leisure destination, thus enriching our community’s overall quality of life. In 2017, the greater Austin MSA welcomed 27.4 million visitors who contributed to $8 billion in economic impact and 125,900 jobs. For more info, visit www.visitaustin.org.
