Boston convention center hotel project moves towards groundbreaking

Completed are the last major reviews of a $150 million project for two mid-priced hotels that will be located near the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, according to Massachusetts Convention Center Authority officials.

Groundbreaking is expected late this year or early in 2014, with the opening scheduled for late 2015. The project is being developed on nearly six acres of land owned by the authority at 371–401 D St. in Boston.

AloftHotel will have 330 rooms and be oriented to business travelers who plan short stays while The Element will have 180 rooms and target guests planning three- to five-day visits.

Hotel developer Commonwealth Ventures and the hotel’s architect made a final design presentation to city officials, completing the design review process.

Elected officials and community representatives from the South Boston and Fort Point neighborhoods, the developer and officials from the convention center authority presented the hotel design and discussed the community benefits from the project. According to officials, a community review process was completed at the presentation.
