The $35 million Costa Rica Convention Center opened on April 5 in San Jose, Costa Rica. Designed as a modern and ecological space with room capacities ranging from 10 to 3,038 people, and a total capacity of 4,595 people, it was built with bioclimatic, environmental and sustainable design and architecture. It features naturally lit interior spaces and internal and external LED lighting and water heating systems with solar panels. There is external parking for 1,000 vehicles, 40 buses and 80 minibuses.
The center is managed by a partnership of Colombian group Heroica and Costa Rican firm Volio and Trejos. Heroica group also manages the profitable Cartagena Convention Center.
Costa Rica Tourism Board projects at least a 12 percent profit for the center. The board hopes to attract many international conventions and congresses by offering an alternative to other destinations with competitive costs.
“The model of operation is the development of different types of events,” a convention center press release says. “With a unity dedicated to investigation to identify those that have the potential of being organized in Costa Rica, with the idea of generation occupation of the building and economic growth for the city.”
More than 60 meetings have already been confirmed up to 2021. Officials expect the meetings to to generate approximately $210 million in earnings.
