submitted by Tammy McGlade, EpiQ Creative Group on Behalf of EDPA, ESCA, and EIC

Recognizing the urgent need to support actions that align with our ambition to implement eco-conscious practices within the global business events and trade show industry, the Experiential Design and Producers Association (EDPA), Exhibition Services & Contractors Association (ESCA) and Events Industry Council (EIC) have joined forces to enhance existing resources and champion our stakeholders so that we can continue to drive impact. Today, they proudly announce the release of comprehensive guidance for sustainable exhibition stand construction aimed at influencing and elevating the sustainability practices of their members for the betterment of our industry.

The EDPA, ESCA, and EIC collaboratively developed groundbreaking sustainability guidance that has been explicitly tailored to meet the unique needs and challenges faced by the various industry verticals served by the organizations’ members. The Guidance for Sustainable Exhibition Stand Construction (GSESC) ensures that EDPA, ESCA, and EIC member organizations have clear and actionable guidance to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible practices. Reduce 2 served as the technical writer for the initiative.

“Amidst the evolution of event experiences, we must prioritize sustainability at every stage of planning and execution,” explained Dasher Lowe, Executive Director of EDPA. “Our partnership with ESCA and EIC represents a crucial step in driving this transformation, setting new benchmarks, and inspiring our industry peers to embrace sustainability wholeheartedly. The Guidance for Sustainable Exhibition Stand Construction encompasses various facets of event planning and execution, including, but not limited to, waste reduction, energy conservation, responsible sourcing, and community engagement, and aligns with the EIC Sustainable Event Standards. The guidance aims to minimize environmental footprints and foster a culture of awareness and responsibility among event professionals.”

“At ESCA, we understand the pivotal role that events play in shaping experiences and creating lasting impressions,” remarked Julie Kagy, Director of Operations of ESCA. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these experiences are not at the cost of our planet. Through this sustainability guidance, we envision a future where events thrive harmoniously with our environment.”

“The Guidance for Sustainable Exhibition Stand Construction represents an important milestone in our industry’s journey towards environmental responsibility, providing nuanced and informed solutions in this key aspect of our practice,” said EIC President and CEO Amy Calvert. “As advocates for the global business events community, EIC is proud to endorse the comprehensive guidance, which will undoubtedly assist our sector in implementing conscientious and eco-conscious experiences for our events and exhibitions.”

“Reduce 2 is honored to have collaborated with the EDPA, ESCA, and EIC in crafting the Guidance for Sustainable Exhibition Stand Construction,” commented Glenn Hansen, CEO of Reduce 2. “As a technical writer, our team is committed to leveraging expertise and insights to ensure this guidance reflects the highest standards in sustainability practices. We believe that by providing clear, actionable guidance, we can empower industry members to create impactful, environmentally conscious events that resonate with audiences while minimizing the collective footprint on the planet.”

The release of the guidance marks a significant milestone in the ongoing commitment of all three organizations to drive positive change within the events industry. EDPA, ESCA, and EIC invite their members, industry partners, and stakeholders to review the guidance and envision practical implementation. Industry feedback is welcome so the guidance can continue to evolve.

Next, the guidance will be made available widely in the events industry. It will be added as a supporting resource for the EIC Sustainable Event Standards, where organisations can receive third-party audited certification. The EIC Sustainable Event Standards are a collection of eight (8) specific standards that assess events and industry suppliers on a wide range of sustainability criteria in support of environmental and social responsibility. The standards are a framework for collaboration, providing a strong focus on guidance and metrics so that event professionals, at all stages of their sustainability journey, will have the support needed to implement and measure sustainable practices.

Once shared, all three organizations anticipate their members will embrace and champion the sustainability guidance and pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and impactful future.
