Event Safety Alliance, a non-profit safety trade organization serving the needs of the live event industry, announced the appointment its executive director. Appointed unanimously by the Board, Dr. Donald C. Cooper will assume daily business management responsibilities from ESA founder Jim Digby, who will continue to serve as chair of the ESA Board of Directors.
“Dr. Cooper is passionate about the future of the Event Safety Alliance, and we’re delighted to have him shepherd this mission,” stated Digby. “Don possesses the exact qualities we desire in an executive director, and his tremendous leadership, business and regulatory experience will undoubtedly prove essential to growing the ESA into the industry’s preeminent voice for safety within the live event space.”
An original member of the Event Safety Alliance Board of Directors, Dr. Cooper will work directly with Digby and the current Board to secure the long-term growth and relevancy of the ESA’s mission around the world.
“I am humbled and excited to take on this new challenge,” stated Dr. Cooper. “I very much look forward to working with the board of directors and our industry allies to elevate the ‘life-safety first’ mission of the ESA.”
Dr. Cooper currently serves on the ESA Board of Directors and is managing editor and contributing author of the Event Safety Guide. He retired in 2012 from the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal, after five years as the Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal, two years as the State Fire Marshal, and 33 years in the career fire, rescue, law enforcement and emergency medical services. He has also taught, researched, written widely and consulted on technical search and rescue topics, which has taken him around the world. From 2012 to 2014, he served as the executive director of Medical Education and Research at Akron General Health Systems in Northeast Ohio, and as a labor-management consultant with National Rescue Consultants. He holds a PhD in Business Administration and an MBA from the University of California.
