Joe Popolo, a Texas-based businessman and former CEO of Freeman Co., has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands. Trump announced the appointment on January 3, 2025, via his social media platform, Truth Social, stating:
“Joe is a successful businessman and philanthropist across many different sectors. For over 20 years, he helped transform the Freeman Company into the world’s leading live event brand experience company.”
According to Boston College News, Popolo, 57, is the founder and CEO of Charles & Potomac Capital, a private investment firm in Dallas that focuses on technology, healthcare, media, energy, and real estate investments. Before launching the firm, Popolo had a distinguished career at Freeman Co., where he served as president from 2001 to 2008 and CEO from 2008 to 2019.
During his tenure at Freeman Co., Popolo oversaw the company’s expansion into global markets and helped triple its annual revenue to $3 billion, transforming Freeman into a world leader in live event brand experiences, according to Freeman Co. press releases.
Freeman Legacy and Family Ties
Founded in the 1920s by Buck Freeman, Freeman Co. has grown from a regional decorating company in Iowa into a global provider of event marketing services. The company remains family-owned and continues to be a cornerstone of the trade show and experiential marketing industry.
Popolo stepped down as CEO of Freeman Co. in 2019, according to Freeman Co. press releases, after more than two decades with the company. Following his departure, he founded Charles & Potomac Capital, a private investment firm in Dallas.
Popolo’s ties to Freeman Co. are both professional and personal. He is married to Christine Freeman Popolo, daughter of Donald S. Freeman Jr., who served as the company’s chairman until 2019. Christine Freeman Popolo has also been a member of Freeman Co.’s board of directors, underscoring the family’s long-standing involvement in the company’s operations.
“Joe’s contributions during his 22 years with Freeman were pivotal in shaping the company’s growth and global reputation,” stated Freeman Co. in a 2019 announcement regarding leadership changes.
Philanthropic Commitments and Educational Ties
In addition to his corporate achievements, Popolo has been active in philanthropy and education. He joined the Boston College Board of Trustees in June 2023, reflecting his dedication to community service and education, according to Boston College News. Popolo and his wife have supported several initiatives at Boston College, including the establishment of scholarships and endowments such as the Popolo Family Executive Directorship at the Edmund H. Shea Jr. Center for Entrepreneurship.
Diplomatic Appointment and Confirmation Process
Popolo’s nomination is one of several high-profile appointments announced by President-elect Trump as part of his new administration. If confirmed by the Senate, Popolo will succeed Shefali Razdan Duggal as U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands.
The Netherlands, a key U.S. ally, plays an important role in global trade and security partnerships. With his extensive experience in business and global strategy, Popolo is expected to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Popolo’s nomination marks the continuation of his career in leadership, transitioning from the live events industry to a new role on the global diplomatic stage.
