The tradeshow and events industry mourns the loss of a beloved leader, Walter F. Queen, who passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 56. Walt was the CEO and co-founder of Queen Exhibits in Piqua, Ohio, a company that became a cornerstone of the tradeshow industry under his guidance.
Born on December 15, 1968, in Troy, Ohio, Walt was the son of Roger and Cora (Larck) Queen. After earning a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Bluffton University and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University, Walt combined his keen business acumen with his passion for innovation to leave an indelible mark on the industry.
In 2002, Walt and his wife, Sheryl (Simmons) Queen, founded Queen Exhibits from their home office. Together, they built a company recognized for its creative and logistical excellence, serving clients across the nation. Under Walt’s leadership, Queen Exhibits grew into a multi-facility operation employing over 20 dedicated professionals. As a member of the Exhibit Designers and Producers Association (EDPA), Walt forged lasting connections and was celebrated for his mentorship and commitment to the industry’s growth.
Reflecting on Walt’s contributions, his wife and business partner, Sheryl Queen, shared, “It seems unreal to have to share this incredibly traumatic and sad post. My heart is so broken. We lost our visionary, leader, Owner, CEO; but I lost my very best friend. He worked harder than anyone I’ve ever seen in my entire life. He loved every momentous step we took in this company. He painted floors, built racks, paid our employees, HR, paid vendors, built displays, used Six Sigma to run the warehouse, all the banking, taxes… I could go all day. He LOVED all of it. But most of all, he loved our people. We are family. We will do him proud.”
She continued, “He would say, ‘I’m doing this for you and our family!’ He was an amazing Godly man, the very best husband, incredible father, and outstanding pap!! I’m your girl, and I’ll finish what we started. I’ll love you forever; now rest, my sweet Walt.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Walt was a family man and a devout Christian whose faith guided every aspect of his life. He was a member of the Upper Room Worship Center in Tipp City, where he and Sheryl shared their deep commitment to their community. Walt’s favorite saying, “It’s not work if you love it,” exemplified the passion and joy he brought to his career and personal life.
Walt is survived by his wife Sheryl; children Ashley (Dave) Bowman, Kevin (Lisa) Queen, Amanda (Jorden) Mumaw, and Cody Campbell; and grandchildren Ethan, Abigail, Connor, Grace, Jorden II, Willow, and Meadow. He is also remembered by his eight siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, his cherished dog Taz, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter Brittany, his brother Daniel Stevens, and his granddaughter Lucy Queen.
Walt’s contributions to the industry were matched only by his love for his family and hobbies, including traveling, golfing, and bow hunting. Known for his humor and compassion, he instilled lasting values of hard work, faith, and kindness in those who knew him.
A private service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024, at the Upper Room Worship Center in Tipp City, with Pastor Gregory Simmons officiating. Visitation will take place from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of Walt’s life at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Morgan’s Place Cemetery (www.morgansplacecemetery.org). Guestbook condolences can be shared at Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
