Inaugural SoCal Randy Golf Memorial Open for Registration

The inaugural SoCal Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic will take place at Strawberry Farms Golf Club on Monday, April 29, in conjunction with the Southern California EDPA Chapter.

Randy Smith was a project manager for an Atlanta-based exhibit house, IDEAS, inc. He died tragically in an automobile accident on his way home after working long hours at the Super Show in January 1995. Smith left behind a wife Jenny, and two small children, Austin and Justin. Two of his co workers at IDEAS, Ted Peterson and Rich Johnson, started the RSMGC in August 1995 in hopes of helping the emotional and financial burden Smith’s death caused his family.

In the first two years, the event focused solely on providing support for the Smith family. In 1997 the decision was made to open up the event to other families who had suffered a similar tragedy or faced true hardship.

The SoCal Randy will take place at the Strawberry Farms Golf Course at 11 Strawberry Farms Road in Irvine, Calif., the day before the Southern California EDPA chapter meeting. Those interested in playing golf or sponsoring the SoCal Randy can do so online at www.rsmgc.org.

The Southern California Chapter of the EDPA is supporting the SoCal Randy by holding its April meeting the day after the golf event on Tuesday, April 30, at the Hilton Irvine-Orange County Airport. Featured speakers are Dasher Lowe, EDPA executive director and the first registered golfer, and Eddie Newquist, creative executive at GES.

More than 75 exhibit industry professionals came together at the Painted Desert Golf Course in Las Vegas on Feb. 24 for the fifth annual Las Vegas Randy to raise funds for tradeshow industry families in need. Other Randy memorials are scheduled for July 29 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge, Ill., and Oct. 4 at Chateau Elan in Brasetlon, Ga.

The objective of the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic is to help families in the exhibition industry who have suffered severe tragedies or face insurmountable medical expenses. Our commitment is to provide financial and emotional support to all past and present recipients and their families. For more info, visit rsmgc.org.
