London honored as Best Culture Destination

London has been named Best Culture Destination in the inaugural Leading Culture Destinations annual awards.

Cultural institutions in cities as far and wide as Paris, New York, Miami, Shanghai, Oslo and Berlin, were among those competing to win nine awards at the event, held at Jumeirah Carlton Tower in London.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was named Leading Culture Destination for Architecture & Spatial Design while the Museum of Modern Art in New York was recognized as the Leading Culture Destination for Shop and Museo Jumex in Mexico City chosen as the Best New Culture Destination.

This latest accolade comes as London plays host to a blockbuster Autumn Season of cultural exhibitions and events. The line-up of shows and exhibitions taking place in the autumn include Turner at Tate Britain, Anselm Kiefer at the Royal Academy and Ming: 50 years that changed China, a major exhibition covering the Ming Dynasty reign at the British Museum featuring some of the most beautiful objects and paintings ever made in China. In “The man who never lived and who will never die”, the Museum of London will invite visitors to delve into the mind of Sherlock Holmes, the world’s most famous fictional detective, and the museum will recreate the atmosphere of Sherlock’s London through film, photographs and original artefacts.

“London is a unique and diverse destination that combines dazzling living history with magnificent exhibitions, world-class theatre, bustling nightlight and fantastic cuisine. The city’s outstanding cultural calendar is hugely important to incentive organizers and the city’s position as a global business center ensures that planners can seamlessly combine corporate meetings with unforgettable reward programs. Clients can enjoy access to private viewings in museums and art galleries, behind-the-scenes theatre and gallery tours, as well as discussions with well-known artists, actors and musicians. We are delighted that London’s fantastic cultural offering has been recognized on the global stage by this award,” stated Chris FJ Lynn, vice president North America & Emerging Markets – Business Tourism at London & Partners.

New figures released earlier this month revealed that London’s museums and galleries saw record-breaking visitor numbers over the summer period.  In August alone, the re-opened Imperial War Museum welcomed more than 250,000 visitors as it helped to mark the centenary of the First World War. The National Gallery saw 681,000 pass through its doors – more than 100,000 above last August’s figure.

The Tate announced that Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs received 562,622 visitors between April to September making it the most popular exhibition ever held at Tate and the first to receive over half a million people.

We are delighted that so many people came to see Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs at Tate Modern which captured the imaginations of visitors of all ages throughout the spring and summer this year. London is one of the most important places in the world to experience art from major historic collections to the very best new contemporary art,” said Nicholas Serota, director, Tate.

In 2015, exhibitions coming to London include The Body Beautiful: Art & Thought in Ancient Greece at the British Museum (March 26 –July 5, 2015), Inventing Impressionism at National Gallery (March 4 –May 31, 2015) and What is Luxury? at the V&A (April 25 – September 27, 2015).

Event planners interested in incorporating London’s cultural offering into their incentive programs should contact the London Convention Bureau at London & Partners. The team is attending IMEX America in Las Vegas on stand 2416 and EIBTM in Barcelona on stand G10.

At IMEX America visitors to the stand will enjoy a 3D virtual tour of London’s famous landmarks, have the opportunity to create a dynamic event itinerary with our knowledgeable team and enjoy a taste of London at our famous happy hour.
