Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre is proud to have again achieved gold status through EarthCheck, a business advisory group specializing in sustainability and destination management for the travel and tourism industry.
MCEC Sustainability Manger Samantha Ferrier (pictured left) says the achievement is an important milestone in their broader commitment to sustainability, including MCEC’s new five-year sustainability strategy.
“As an industry, we need to be accountable for the impact we have on the world around us. This means, to make a meaningful shift across the sector, we must all commit to a shared vision of change. To be recognized as a leader in the sustainability space is a wonderful step towards our vision, to take tangible steps towards a positive impact on the environment,” she says.
MCEC has been EarthCheck certified since 2009 and has proudly achieved gold status since 2016.
MCEC has cemented itself as a leader in the sustainability space over the years through initiatives that include its involvement in the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project, appointing a full-time sustainability manager and championing local produce.
To avoid catastrophic climate change, the world needs to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Today, we are already at 1.1 °C and feeling the effects, meaning that the window for achieving our target and avoiding the most catastrophic impacts of climate change is rapidly closing.
The very environmental values and cultural assets that attract visitors to destinations need to be protected and responsibly managed.
The tourism industry and its operators are key to creating this change.
Stewart Moore (pictured right), CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, says that MCEC has taken a significant leadership position in sustainability. Moore says, “I would like to congratulate whole team at MCEC on their achievement, MCEC is a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”
By continuing to work with EarthCheck, MCEC joins other industry leaders who are taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face the planet.
