On September 12, the Pennsylvania Convention Center hosted the PCMA Greater Philadelphia Chapter’s Education Day and Trade Show, drawing over 200 business events professionals from across the country. The event featured more than 50 exhibitors and provided a platform for discussions on the latest trends impacting the events industry.
The day began with a welcome from Bonnie Grant, president of the PCMA Greater Philadelphia Chapter and executive director of PHL Life Sciences, part of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB). Attendees from a range of sectors—including CVBs, hotels, AV companies, and transportation services—came together to exchange ideas, explore new business opportunities, and attend educational sessions.
Insights from Education Sessions
Two educational sessions focused on practical issues facing the events industry. In the morning, Joshua L. Grimes, Esq., an attorney with extensive experience in the industry, presented “Just When I Thought I’d Seen It All!: New Considerations in Contracting.” Grimes discussed the challenges event planners and suppliers are encountering due to factors like travel disruptions, security concerns, and new legal requirements. He provided guidance on how to navigate these changes and adapt contracts to address new risks.
The afternoon session, “10 Fresh Insights That Will Transform How You Plan, Produce, and Market Events,” was led by Kimberly Hardcastle Geddes, President of mdg, A Freeman Company. Geddes spoke about how generational and societal shifts are changing expectations for event design and marketing. She emphasized the need for planners to adjust their strategies to meet the evolving needs of modern audiences.
Philadelphia as a Key Meeting Destination
During the event, Gregg Caren, President and CEO of PHLCVB, highlighted Philadelphia’s role as a growing hub for business events. He also announced that PCMA Convening Leaders—the organization’s annual flagship event—will be held in Philadelphia in 2026, further showcasing the city’s prominence in the meetings and events industry.
Networking and Community Contributions
The event included opportunities for attendees to network with exhibitors and peers. A networking reception on the trade show floor offered additional time for participants to connect and explore partnerships. In a show of community support, attendees also contributed school supplies to Dr. Joseph E. Johnson Elementary School in Wilmington, DE, as part of a charitable initiative organized by PCMA.
The PCMA Greater Philadelphia Education Day and Trade Show offered attendees insights into current industry challenges and opportunities for collaboration. With Philadelphia set to host PCMA Convening Leaders 2026, the city’s role in shaping the future of the business events industry continues to expand.
