San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau names new senior vice president

Officials for the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau (SDCVB) have named a new city-wide senior sales executive charged with boosting local and national convention sales efforts.

Rick Outcalt has been appointed to the newly created position of senior vice president of city-wide sales. Outcalt most recently served as director of sales and marketing for the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina. With more than 20 years in sales and convention management roles for several Marriott International properties, Outcalt comes to the bureau with a wealth of convention sales experience and 30 years in the hospitality industry.

“With his extensive experience in convention sales and marketing, I am excited about the level of leadership that Rick will bring to our citywide sales team,” said Joe Terzi, president and CEO, SDCVB. “As we continue to evolve the sales and marketing efforts of the San Diego Convention Center, it is crucial to recruit top leadership that can position San Diego as a national frontrunner for convention hosting. With Rick’s leadership, I feel confident we will continue to grow as a world-class convention destination.”

Outcalt will manage a team of eight national sales directors and oversee efforts in offices located in Washington D.C., Chicago and San Diego. The San Diego Convention Center is finalizing plans for a proposed expansion that would add about 400,000 square feet to the existing Convention Center space.

As of July, sales and marketing of the San Diego Convention Center was awarded to the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau.
