During the 2017 SEGD Conference Experience Miami, winners of the 2017 SEGD Achievement Awards were announced and celebrated among the largest annual gathering of members of the experiential graphic design community. Since 1987, the Society for Experiential Graphic Design has honored the individuals, companies and institutions whose work has significantly advanced the environmental and experiential graphic design fields. The 2017 honorees and awards are as follows.

Fellow Award: Jan Lorenc, Lorenc + Yoo Design – The SEGD Fellow Award recognizes an individual for promoting the highest values in environmental and/or experiential graphic design and significantly contributing to the direction and growth of the field. SEGD Fellows include Donald Meeker, Doug Morris, Chris Calori and David Vanden-Eynden, Wayne Hunt, Massimo Vignelli, Deborah Sussman and Robert Probst. Past SEGD Board member Jan Lorenc has been Principal and Design Director at Lorenc+Yoo Design since 1978. His design philosophy is rooted in a holistic understanding of the project and the creation of an integrated project experience—a methodology that has carried his firm on a wide range of architecture, public art, landscape, interior and experiential graphic design projects worldwide. A frequent lecturer, Lorenc has been honored by many design publications/organizations.

Distinguished Member Award: Kelly Kolar, Kolar Design – The SEGD Distinguished Member Award recognizes an individual for demonstrating outstanding volunteer efforts while significantly contributing to the direction, growth and excellence of SEGD programs. Recipients of the award have been instrumental in cultivating university programs, advancing accessible and green design and promoting cultural agendas through design. Past winners include Alexandra Wood and Lucy Holmes, Cybelle Jones, David Middleton, Wayne Hunt, the SEGD Green Committee and Ken Ethridge. Since she joined SEGD in the 1990s, Kelly Kolar—President, Founder and Chief Creative Officer at Kolar Design—has served the association as an involved supporter, Board Member and ambassador, helping build awareness nationally and locally. In addition to her award-winning design work, Kolar has been introducing a new generation to experiential graphic design as an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati.

Arrow Award: SH Immersive Environments – The SEGD Arrow Award recognizes exemplary service or dedication to advancing technologies and manufacturing in experiential graphic design and striving to provide the highest quality in products and services to the field. Recipients of the SEGD Arrow Award have advanced new manufacturing processes, led the development of innovative new products and championed sustainable practices and materials. Past winners include 3M, Neiman & Company, CREO Industrial Arts, Matthews Paint and Nova Polymers. Innovative design solutions fabrication firm SH Immersive Environments was founded in 1975. Through the use of its exclusive FOLIA (custom high-pressure laminate) and ALTO (custom powder-coated graphics embedded in aluminum) products, they create a variety of graphic surfaces including signage, flooring systems, partitions, murals, cladding and tables. They also design, build and install corporate environments.

Insight Award: M.D. Anderson Cancer Center – The SEGD Insight Award recognizes entities that consistently commission environmental graphic design programs that significantly enhance or promote opportunities for the field and experiential graphic design education and demonstrate a long-standing commitment to recognize the field. Recipients of the award are the visionary design clients behind years of outstanding museum exhibits, innovative hospital wayfinding systems and rewarding partnerships between architects, developers and designers. Past winners include Taubman, Portsmouth City Council, TATE, Apple, Amtrak, Herman Miller and the National Park Service. The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center launched their groundbreaking integrated wayfinding system in 2004 with the help of fd2s and have funded an active, respected Graphics and Wayfinding Group within their organization that has maintained and enhanced the system over the last 10 years as facilities doubled to 18 million square feet. Today they are piloting indoor location technology—another big leap in usefulness for patients and visitors.
