Conventions at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre contributed nearly NZ$74 million, or about $43 million in U.S. dollars, to New Zealand’s economy during the year ending June 2026.
An Infometrics impact assessment attributed more than NZ$60 million, or about $35 million, to Canterbury. It also estimated that the conventions supported 827 regional jobs.
Te Pae hosted 56 conventions during the year, including several international events. The venue also held 133 exhibitions, banquets, meetings, and live events. Together, those events drew more than 125,000 attendees.
Conventions support Christchurch economy
Major events included Adaptation Futures 2025, the International Society of Arboriculture Conference, and the 10th International Water Association Asia-Pacific Regional Group and Water New Zealand Conference and Expo.
Te Pae also hosted The Art of Banksy during its summer shoulder season. The exhibition drew more than 38,000 visitors.
“The Crown backed Te Pae to help drive the regeneration of central Christchurch by attracting more visitors, investment, and activity,” says John O’Hagan, chief executive of Crown Infrastructure Delivery. “These results show it is delivering on that vision in a very tangible way.”

Venue passes four-year mark
Te Pae opened in May 2022. Since then, it has hosted more than 865 events and welcomed more than 422,000 visitors.
The venue can accommodate up to 2,000 delegates. It includes a 1,364-seat auditorium, 2,800 square meters of exhibition space, and 24 meeting rooms.
