Construction on the Kentucky Exposition Center’s $460 million transformation continues toward a year-end milestone, with the first phase scheduled for substantial completion by Thursday, Dec. 31.
The work became more visible after Interstate 65 through Louisville reopened Wednesday, July 29. A five-mile section near the exposition center had closed June 1 for bridge replacements, limiting public views of the construction site for nearly two months.
Phase I represents a $180 million investment and includes a new 350,000-square-foot multipurpose facility. Kentucky Venues says the space will support livestock competitions, equine events, sporting tournaments, tradeshows, and conventions.
Construction progress builds through summer
Crews installed 11,400 feet of sanitary piping and 300 utility floor boxes in the exhibit hall floor in June. They also rebuilt 2,903 parking spaces and installed more than 40,000 concrete masonry units.
The project averaged 240 workers on site each day during that period. Kentucky Venues also reported 41,536 labor hours for May.
In July, crews installed more than 2,800 sprinkler heads, two miles of ductwork, and more than 8,500 ceramic restroom tiles. They also began placing Kentucky limestone at the facility’s front entrances.

“For the past two months the progress being made wasn’t as visible to the public, but our crews never slowed down,” said Michael E. Berry, interim president and chief executive officer of Kentucky Venues. “With I-65 reopening ahead of schedule, people are going to see a building that looks completely different from what it did in the spring. This building is an investment in agriculture, in tourism and in economic development, and it’s going to serve Kentuckians in all 120 counties for generations to come.”
Major events return during construction
The reopening comes ahead of the 57th annual Street Rod Nationals, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 9. The event will bring thousands of classic and custom vehicles to the Kentucky Exposition Center.
The 122nd Kentucky State Fair will follow from Thursday, Aug. 20, through Sunday, Aug. 30.
Kentucky Venues expects Phase I to reach substantial completion by the end of 2026. The new facility is scheduled to begin hosting major events in 2027.
The broader transformation represents the largest capital investment in the Kentucky Exposition Center’s history, according to the release.
