Legends Global has joined the U.S. Food Waste Pact, a national effort to cut food waste across the food supply chain.
Legends joins food waste effort
ReFED and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) lead the U.S. Food Waste Pact. The effort brings together producers, foodservice operators, grocery retailers, hospitality companies, and other food businesses.
Together, those groups share data, test ideas, and track waste reduction.
Food waste remains a major issue for live events and hospitality. According to ReFED, about 29 percent of all food in the United States goes unsold or uneaten each year. That equals 70 million tons, or 114 billion lost meals.
In addition, 12.6 million tons of food go uneaten each year in the foodservice sector.
Live events add operational focus
Through its Legends Global Acts program, Legends Global says it will increase local sourcing, reduce food waste, and improve waste diversion. Those goals apply across its live event and venue operations.
Lindsay Arell, chief sustainability officer for Legends Global, says food waste management matters at live events.
“Joining the U.S. Food Waste Pact is a proud and purposeful commitment for our team at Legends Global,” says Arell.
Pact targets shared solutions
The U.S. Food Waste Pact uses a “Target, Measure, Act” framework. The program helps food businesses collect and review waste data. It also helps them share best practices and test waste-reduction strategies.
Sara Burnett, executive director at ReFED, says event food waste has been a focus area for the Pact during the past year.
“Tackling food waste at events serves to both divert food waste from the landfill and educate attendees about food waste reduction,” says Burnett.
