Team San Jose exec named ‘CFO of the Year’

Team San Jose CFO Janette Sutton has won the prestigious CFO of the Year award for non-profit companies from the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.

With more than 20 years of experience in hospitality, from casino gaming and conventions to food and beverage and hotel operations, Sutton has achieved industry renown for innovation and integrity. Over the years she has developed a strong track record in organizing departments from the ground up and improving existing accounting and finance departments. Throughout her career she has demonstrated leadership in compliance, systems development and best financial practices. She also has been recognized as an outstanding mentor with a gift for identifying, developing and building team talents.

“Janette has served as the catalyst for improved systems, structures, standards and reporting,” said Bill Sherry, CEO, Team San Jose. “Her leadership has improved efficiencies that have contributed to Team San Jose growing revenues during challenging economic times, which have helped support much needed jobs and business in the community.”

Under Sutton’s leadership, Team San Jose met and exceeded seven out of nine performance measures set by the City of San Jose during challenging economic times, including growing revenue to $19 million this year – $7 million above projections.

“Janette has played a key role in turning around Team San Jose’s reputation in the community,” said Mike Fox Jr., treasurer, Team San Jose. “Her leadership and expertise has helped dramatically improved the organization’s financial systems and transparency, making it a model for other community organizations to emulate.”

Working with the Team San Jose and city partners, Sutton implemented new business and management practices that have transformed the company and its credibility, including aligning financial systems with new technology to better track and analyze revenue and expense statements.

Prior to joining Team San Jose, Sutton worked as CFO of Warner Gaming, and moved up from director of finance to CFO at Station Casinos. She also worked at various hotels, such as the Venetian in Las Vegas.
