Teamster jobs preserved throughout MPEA’s privatization process

Teamsters Local 727 delivered on its promise to preserve all of its members’ jobs with the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) despite the privatization of Navy Pier and McCormick Place in Chicago.

Local 727 secured new five-year contracts with annual raises for traffic and receiving members to mark one of the final stages of the year-long transition. The contracts have been ratified by member votes.

“The union worked tirelessly with members and the MPEA to ensure every single Teamster job was preserved,” said John Coli Jr., president, Local 727. “It was a relatively smooth transition thanks in large part to our hardworking members’ patience and cooperation.”

Earlier this year, Local 727 secured a new five-year contract with private management company SMG for security officers, fire safety officers and trolley drivers at McCormick Place and Navy Pier. MPEA will continue to be the employer for traffic and receiving members.

Teamsters Local 727 represents hundreds of workers in the tradeshow industry throughout the Chicago area.
