Captivate 2027: 30 Years of Evolution

Every industry evolves, and the tradeshow world is no exception. New technologies emerge, attendees’ expectations shift and the way exhibitors define success continue to change.

After more than 30 years designing, building and managing exhibits for brands across the country, Captivate Exhibits has seen trends come and go. Looking ahead to 2027, the Captivate team highlights several shifts in trends changing how companies approach tradeshows.

These shifts are largely centered around Artificial Intelligence (AI) because it is gaining traction in tradeshows right now, usually framed as a threat to what exhibiting has always been built on: face-to-face connection. But the future of AI in the tradeshow industry lies in using it to make those interactions more meaningful. Successful exhibiting has always been built on conversations, and that won’t change. But AI can help exhibitors have better conversations with the right attendees.

Before an event, AI can assist in identifying target attendees, prioritizing prospects, scheduling meetings and supporting personalized outreach campaigns. Post-show, it can help analyze event performance, identify the hottest opportunities and streamline follow-up communications. The result: Exhibitors spend more time building relationships and less time managing administrative tasks.

Another trend Captivate is seeing is a shift in the fundamental question clients are asking when they begin planning an exhibit. Traditionally, exhibit planning started with a floor plan, a booth size and a fabrication budget, all centered around one question: “What should our exhibit look like?”

Today, clients are coming to the table earlier and asking a more strategic question: “What should people think, feel and do after they visit?”

That shift reflects a broader move from exhibit design to experience design. Brands are no longer looking at the booth as a standalone structure. They are thinking about how every element of the experience—from the environment and messaging to the interactions with staff—can create a specific response and connect that response back to the brand. The booth is still important, but it is just one part of the experience.

That focus on experience is becoming even more important as AI changes how people encounter brands. As businesses and consumers are increasingly surrounded by AI-generated content and digital interactions, the value of something tangible and human stands out. At a tradeshow, the product is there, the people demonstrating it are there, and attendees can ask questions, have conversations and experience the brand firsthand. In that environment, authenticity becomes part of the experience itself.

And that experience doesn’t begin when the show floor opens or end when it closes.

The final shift Captivate highlighted as a focus for 2027 is the fact that brands are rethinking where tradeshow success actually begins and ends. Instead of treating the event as a standalone experience, exhibitors are treating it as one chapter in a larger campaign. Pre-show outreach, on-site engagement and post-show follow-up are becoming just as important as the days on the floor, requiring a unified strategy and a partner who can carry the brand and conversation through the entire event lifecycle.

These shifts reflect a larger change in how brands should think about tradeshows: the exhibit is no longer the end product. It is a tool for creating meaningful experiences, building relationships and achieving business goals.

That is the approach Captivate brings to every project. Before design even begins, Captivate starts with conversation and strategy—understanding a client’s objectives, audience, business objectives and desired outcomes to create experiences that go beyond attracting attention on the show floor. From tradeshow exhibits and branded environments to experiential activations, Captivate partners with brands throughout the entire process, from initial strategy and design through fabrication, installation and post-show evaluation, creating experiences that are both memorable and measurable.

The industry will continue to evolve, and new trends will undoubtedly emerge. But one thing hasn’t changed in more than 30 years: the most successful exhibits are the ones that create meaningful experiences, spark lasting relationships and deliver real business results. No trend will ever change that.
