Chef Gregory Pittman Named Executive Chef at Baltimore CC

Centerplate, the leading hospitality partner to North America’s premier entertainment venues and convention centers, announce the appointment of Chef Gregory Pittman as the new executive chef at the Baltimore Convention Center. Pittman’s wealth of experience in all types of venues and culinary cuisines will serve the Charm City and the broader Mid-Atlantic region well.

Originally from Memphis, Tenn., Pittman is a Southern-bred chef with world-refined cuisine. From the age of seven, Pittman worked with family-owned restaurants and learned the importance of service through food. Pittman earned his associate’s degree in Culinary Arts from LeCole Culinaire in Memphis, Tenn., where he was trained under great chefs like Chef Quan Anderson (former executive chef at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn.). Three years ago, Pittman moved to Chicago to better define those skills while tackling new culinary challenges. During his time in Chicago, he focused on diversifying his styles by preparing multiple cuisines ranging from Creole to Middle Eastern. Pittman oversaw two university food and beverage programs where he led teams of 40-75 employees while instilling a complete focus on their growth and development. With more than ten years of experience leading culinary teams as an executive chef, Pittman is committed to bringing that drive for learning to his next venture.

“It has been a pleasure working with Chef Greg,” says Peggy Daidakis, the executive director of the Baltimore Convention Center. “He is a great addition to the Baltimore Convention Center team. I am impressed with his culinary skills and interest to learn our local cuisine, as well as integrating his specialties into our menu selections.”

Centerplate, a Sodexo company, has been the exclusive food and beverage provider for the Baltimore Convention Center since 2009 and oversees a program that authentically incorporates the local flavor of the city. The local team, which also services the National Aquarium, artfully blends innovative presentation and style with menus that highlight Maryland flavors and a level of service clients have come to expect. Being the catalyst for economic growth and tourism in the region, the Baltimore Convention Center maintains 300,000 square feet of exhibition space and 85,000 square feet of meeting space welcoming over 500,000 attendees each year. With the addition of Pittman as executive chef, Centerplate will continue to work closely with the venue to create extraordinary experiences for every guest.

“We are excited to have Chef Gregory Pittman lead our culinary team here,” adds Centerplate Regional Vice President Michael Barrett. “He is a well-trained chef who has performed well everywhere he has been, whether in healthcare, hotels, fine dining, or higher education. He will help grow the multiple styles of cuisines for event planners we offer here and—yes—he is already perfecting his take on crab cakes.”

The Baltimore Convention Center was recently chosen by Exhibitor magazine as one of its honorees for their First Annual Centers of Excellence Awards, which recognizes North America’s best convention centers for tradeshows and corporate events.

The Baltimore Convention Center is the premier location in the mid-Atlantic region for organizations to host conventions, meetings, banquets, trade shows, and other events. Since opening its doors in 1979, the Center brings together all of the essential elements needed for producing successful events and has been the catalyst for economic growth and tourism in the region. Construction of the Baltimore Convention Center preceded Harborplace and the National Aquarium, making it the crowned jewel in the redevelopment of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The addition of the facility bolstered tourism and its success spurred growth for other projects from retail to restaurants, and attractions. These elements have added to the appeal of Baltimore as a popular destination. The expansion of the Baltimore Convention Center opened in 1996. The facility currently hosts over 140 events per year and welcomes over 500,000 attendees. For more info, visit www.bccenter.org.
