Las Vegas hospitality pioneer hits trifecta for lifetime achievement

Patti Shock, a founding member and academic consultant for The International School of Hospitality (TISOH), a school for training and career development in hospitality, has won three lifetime achievement awards this year.

ECN 122014_POM_TISOH_ Patti ShockShock received the first national Icon Award in July from the National Association of Catering and Events (NACE). She was also inducted into the Convention Industry Council’s (CIC) Hall of Leaders in October, the highest honor in the industry. Presented to her in November, Shock achieved the Legacy Award from the NACE Las Vegas chapter.

“We are honored to have Patti Shock leading the next generation of hospitality professionals,” said Tim Lam, executive director, TISOH. “She is an innovator, and an inspiration. Among the top circles of our industry, she is known as the Mother of Convention Education.”

A pioneer in higher education, Shock was among the first in higher education to embrace distance learning, and 15 years ago, developed the first online hospitality curriculum for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she continues teaching part-time online as a professor emeritus.

Now retired from UNLV, Shock taught for 25 years and served as the chairwoman of the Tourism and Convention Administration Department. She has taught at five institutions over 37 years, receiving 10 awards related to academics and 17 awards for her service to the industry.

CIC represents more than 103,500 individuals and 19,500 firms and properties involved in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry. The organization provides a forum for member organizations to exchange information on global trends and topics, promote excellence in best practices, and advocate the value of the meetings, conventions, exhibitions and events industry.

NACE is the oldest and largest catering association in the world; the Las Vegas chapter was chartered in 2000.
